It is no secret or surprise that AI is transforming the our world by touching every aspect our life, and the public sector is no exception. Indian states are embracing AI and other emerging technologies to improve the delivery of public services to their citizens. Here are five noteworthy initiatives by government organisations in India's states that use AI for better governance, service and citizen satisfaction.

• AI-enabled chatbot to provide information on 1,400 public services – by Government of Maharashtra: In March 2019, the Government of Maharashtra partnered with Haptik, a conversational Al platform, and announced a new AI-powered chatbot called “Aaple Sarkar Bot”. The chatbot provides information and helps with queries on healthcare, education, public utilities, rural development, revenue, and other public services. It can be accessed on the Aaple Sarkar Right to Services (RTS) website. The chatbot comprises a range of algorithms that gives the ability to process numerous queries every day such as analyzing, maintaining records and providing the user with the most useful information.
• Centre of Excellence in Data Sciences and Artificial Intelligence – by Government of Karnataka: In July 2018, the Karnataka Government, in collaboration with NASSCOM, launched a Centre of Excellence in Data Sciences and Artificial Intelligence in Bangalore. The CoE initiative is a nationwide program on innovative solutions in smart manufacturing, automotive, healthcare, agriculture, energy, IoT, retail, telecom, banking, and financial services. 
• Drone-based delivery of healthcare supply – by Government of Telangana: In July 2019, the Government of Telangana partnered with the World Economic Forum for the project "Medicine From the Sky," which focuses on drone-based delivery of blood, vaccines, medical samples, and organs. The project facilitates decision-making in healthcare supply chains, focuses on last-mile deliveries, and address issues that affect the medical distribution system.
• AI video surveillance platform for prisons – by Government of Uttar Pradesh: In a first for India, Uttar Pradesh has deployed AI-enabled video analytics platform "Jarvis" in 70 prisons to monitor inmates. UP Police and Staqu have implemented JARVIS Video Wall to monitor real time footage from CCTV cameras across a vast network and then flag any segment that looks to contain unlawful activity. The platform runs Real Time video data analysis from over 700 cameras installed across 70 prisons in UP with 24/7 data feeds. Key UP Police officials access Mobile App for Real Time insights on potential threats covering 900 km area across parameters like violence, unauthorised intrusions, illegal mobile phone and weapons.
• Pest control system – by Government of Tamil Nadu: Through an app called Uzhavan, the TNeGA pest identification system helps farmers to diagnose the pest infection in their crops and provides them with remedial measures. A farmer can click a picture of the pest infected crop even with a low-cost mobile camera and upload in the Uzhavan app. Once the photo is uploaded, the inbuilt intelligent system analyses and identifies the pest and sends the remedial measures as a text message in Tamil to the farmer’s phone.
